The Women's Fund Recent Grants
The Women for Women giving circle has announced the recipients of its 2016 grant awards. Thanks to ongoing support from Women for Women members, the group was able to award:
  • $5,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Illinois Capital Region to continue the successful Girl Talk program that was piloted in 2015 and provides peer-to-peer life skills lessons and mentoring to girls in grades 5-12.

  • $15,000 to Memorial Behavioral Health (formerly Mental Health Centers of Central Illinois) to expand The Children's MOSAIC Project's "MOSAIC Moms" program that connects low-income single mothers and their children to critical social and emotional supports.

  • $10,000 to The Matthew Project to provide homeless children in District 186 with summer academic tutoring, healthy food, sports and access to mental health screenings through the YMCA's Summer Camp.

  • $5,000 to UIS Center for State Policy and Leadership to launch a regional "Children in Poverty" conference that will explore evidence-based prevention measures and how to translate those into evidence-based practice.

The 2016 grant to Memorial Behavioral Health is a continuation of the first multi-year grant awarded by Women for Women, which is a reflection of the importance and success of the "MOSAIC Moms" program. This is part of a larger community initiative to transform the way mental healthcare is provided in the Springfield area. MOSAIC Moms is a robust collaboration among Mental Health Centers of Central Illinois, Springfield Public Schools, Family Service Center, and Community Child Care Connection to address the mental health and wellbeing of women and children who have very limited social support.

MOSAIC Moms offers three services to help meet the social and emotional needs of low-income single mothers and their children in the Springfield area, including facilitated parent/child groups, delivery of home-based mental health services, and consultation to home visitors and case managers who work with the target population.

Women for Women is an extraordinary group which annually distributes grants to programs to improve the lives of local women and children. Thanks to the generosity of its members, this giving circle has given more than $186,000 over the past eight years.
